Key Cooperative Research Institute for Policy Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the P.R.C (2022-2024)

Center for China’s Relations with Neighboring Countries (CCRNC Fudan) was established on 11 November, 2013, affiliated to Fudan University’s Institute of International Studies (IIS Fudan). As of 30 June 2023, the CCRNC Fudan consists of 8 professors, 2 associate professors and 2 assistant professors.Three professors have witnessed and led the development of the center as the directors of the CCRNC Fudan. They are

  • Prof. ZHAO Weihua, current director of the CCRNC Fudan (2022 ~ )

  • Prof. YANG Jian, former Ambassador to Negara Brunei Darussalam and the second director of the CCRNC Fudan (2019 ~ 2022)

  • Prof. SHI Yuanhua, the first director of the CCRNC Fudan (2013 ~ 2019)

By virtue of preponderant disciplines of Fudan University, such as political science and international relations, the CCRNC Fudan targets at in-depth studies on politics, security, economy, diplomacy, nation, religion, and culture relationships between China and its neighboring countries. The CCRNC Fudan has been actively serving as influential researcher, policy counselor, thought leadership, and opinion maker in the field of China’s relations with neighboring countries. Also, the CCRNC Fudan will bring a batch of professionals together to build up the team for researchers on China’s relations with neighboring countries, and eventually formulate a research school on China’s neighboring diplomacy, which features Fudan’s characteristics, in China’s academia and diplomatic circles.

The CCRNC Fudan is the permanent secretariat of the Network of ASEAN-China Academic Institutes (NACAI). The NACAI was established on 28 May, 2017 at Fudan University. (The website of the NACAI is http://www.iis.fudan.edu.cn/6889/list.htm)

The CCRNC Fudan currently conducts research work in the following areas:

1)Journal of China’s Neighboring Diplomacy (JCND): The JCND is an academic journal of China's Neighboring Diplomacy Studies edited by CCRNC Fudan. The first issue of the JCND was published in June 2015. The editorial board of the JCND welcomes contributions and comments from scholars at home and abroad who are engaged in the study of China’s neighbourhood diplomacy and China’s relations with neighboring countries. 2) Policy advisory papers.

3)“Fudan University Series on China’s Neighboring Diplomacy Studies” (the Series): The main objective of the Series is to conduct original research on China’s Neighboring Diplomacy, making theoretical contributions to this field. Between 2014 and 2022, the “Fudan University Series on China’s Neighboring Diplomacy Studies” published 11 books. 5)Database for Neighboring Countries Overview and Relations with China: The Database is jointly established by CCRNC Fudan and the Collaborative Innovation Center of Territorial Sovereignty and Maritime Rights (CICTSMR). It contains fundamental information of China’s greater neighboring area and their relations with China. “Fudan’s Survey of China’s Neighboring Countries” is one of the achievements of the Database.

6)Academic conferences at home and abroad.

Since 2013, members of the CCRNC Fudan have led numerous academic projects funded by National Social Science Fund. They are:

1) “Inheritance and Innovation of Neo-Confucianism: Conception, Literature and History”, subproject of “Inheritance and Innovation of Neo-Confucianism in Japan and Korea”, funded by the National Social Science Fund of China;

2) “Study on the Development Strategies Integration between China and the Fulcrum Countries along the Belt and Road”, funded by the National Social Science Fund of China;

3) “Study on the New Situation of Korean Peninsula and China’s Diplomatic Strategies”, funded by the National Social Science Fund of China;

4) “Peripheral Security Challenges Faced by China and Neighboring Diplomatic Strategy Adopted by China in the Context of China’s Rapid Rising”, funded by the National Social Science Fund of China;

5) “Study on the New Concept New Thoughts New Strategies of Implementing Neighboring Diplomacy by Central Communist Party of China since the 18th CPC National Congress”, funded by the National Social Science Special Fund of China.

6) “Study on Establishing a Shared Spiritual Home for the Minorities in China”, funded by the National Social Science Fund of China.

Members of the CCRNC Fudan also teach courses regarding China’s relations with neighboring countries as follows: History and Current Situation of China’s Neighboring Diplomacy (Ph.D. course), History and Current Situation of China’s Relation with Korean Peninsula (Ph.D. course), History of China’s Diplomacy in 20th Century (Ph.D. course), Ocean and Contemporary International Relations (graduate course), Analysis of China’s Peripheral Security and Its Neighboring Diplomacy (graduate course), Great Power Politics and Sino-South Korean Relation (graduate course), China’s Boundary and Marine Affairs (undergraduate course), the U.S. Politics and Foreign Relations (undergraduate course), South Korean Politics and Foreign Relations (undergraduate course), Religion and American Society (undergraduate course), Introduction to East Asian Culture (undergraduate course), Introduction to Korean Studies (undergraduate course).

The CCRNC Fudan accepts applicants from Postdoctoral Fellow in political science and graduate students in international relations, international politics, and diplomacy. Also, the CCRNC Fudan welcomes international and domestic scholars and officials in China’s relations with neighboring countries to visit the CCRNC Fudan for exchange studies.
