Born in Ningjin, Hebei, Zhao Weihua completed his undergraduate, master and Ph.D. at Yunnan University, Huazhong Normal University, Hanoi National University and Fudan University. He was assigned to work and study in Vietnam for five years by the Ministry of Education. With a multidisciplinary background in anthropology, history, political science, and international relations, he analyzes the South China Sea issue through an approach that combines international politics, history, and international law. His main research interests include South China Sea issues, Vietnam’s politics and foreign policy, Sino-Vietnamese relations, China's neighborhood strategy, and territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.
