The Institute of International Studies, Fudan University (IIS Fudan), and the Institute of European Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (IES CASS) jointly hosted an academic seminar on Triangular Relations Among China, the U.S., and Europe in the Context of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict. The seminar was organized on December 11th, 2023, in Beijing, with over 50 scholars and doctoral students from various academic institutes participating.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Liu Zuokui, Deputy Director of the IES CASS. Feng Zhongping, Director of the IES CASS, and Wu Xinbo, Dean of the IIS Fudan, delivered keynote speeches.

In his speech titled European and American China Policies and China-U.S.-Europe Relations, Professor Feng Zhongping emphasized that after the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Europe strengthened cooperation with the United States under the NATO framework while emphasizing defense construction within the European Union. He highlighted both similarities and differences in Europe’s and the United States' China policies. Lastly, he emphasized the importance of strengthening interactions with the U.S. and Europe for further development of China from China’s perspective.

Professor Wu Xinbo, in his keynote speech titled Reflections on the Triangular Relations Among China, the U.S., and Europe, pointed out that structural changes are occurring in the triangular relations among China, the U.S., and Europe, as the competitive factors in China-U.S. relations and China-Europe relations are rising. Despite Europe's China policy presenting a growing resemblance to the United States in recent years, uncertainties and differences exist in U.S.-Europe relations. The future of China-U.S. and China-Europe relations is apart, with competition being a major trend in China-U.S. relations, while China-Europe relations involve both competition and cooperation.

The first session of the seminar focused on The Russia-Ukraine Conflict and Triangular Relations Among China, the U.S., and Europe. It was chaired by Zhao Chen, Director of the International Relations Research Office at the IES CASS. The second session focused on Triangular Relations Among China, the United States, and Europe in the New Situation and was chaired by Jian Junbo, Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the Center for China-Europe Relations at the IIS Fudan. The third session focused on China, the U.S., and Europe and the Other Parts of the World and was chaired by Zhang Haiyang, Director of the Editorial Department of European Studies.
