The seminar was highlighted by insightful keynote speeches from Professor Wu Xinbo, Dean of Fudan University’s Institute of International Studies, and Professor Ding Chun, Director of the Centre for European Studies at Fudan University and President of the SIES. The sessions were adeptly chaired by Associate Professor Jian Junbo, Dr. Yang Haifeng, Professor Zhang Yinhong and Professor Wu Huiping, with Professor Xu Mingqi of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences providing a concluding address.

The focal points of the event were two pivotal reports: European Policy Towards China (2023) and EU’s Major Powers and Regional Policies (2023), authored by a dynamic group of twenty scholars from various Shanghai-based academic institutes. The first report delved into the EU and its member states' policy approaches towards China in 2023, examining their motivations, principal themes, impacts, and projected trends. The second report provided a critical analysis of the EU’s strategies concerning major global players and regions including the U.S., Russia, India, Japan, ASEAN, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, exploring each policy's background, drivers, consequences, and future directions. These reports, jointly curated and edited by the CCER Fudan and SIES, have established themselves as vital platforms for fostering scholarly dialogue and collaboration, particularly among the emerging generation of scholars in Shanghai’s European studies sphere.

This year's release marks the seventh consecutive publication of the European Policy Towards China and the third edition of the EU’s Major Powers and Regional Policies. Both reports have consistently attracted the attention of policymakers and think tanks both domestically and internationally, significantly influencing public discourse and policy formulation.

Following the dissemination of the two reports, the assembled experts engaged in rigorous discussions about the current landscape of China-Europe relations, identifying both challenges and opportunities, and debating potential strategies for nurturing a robust and stable partnership between the two entities. These deliberations concluded with affirmative outcomes, paving the way for future cooperative endeavors.
