The Institute of International Studies at Fudan University (IIS Fudan) was founded in November 2000 on the framework of several research centers, including the Center for American Studies, the Center for Japanese Studies, the Center for Korean Studies, and the Research Office for Latin American Studies of Fudan University, etc.

IIS Fudan and its affiliated research centers enjoy reputations in the academic and policy communities. IIS Fudan has been branded the Key Cooperative Research Institute for Policy Studies by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the P.R.C. since 2013. Five affiliated centers are granted the titles of the Registered Centers for Studies of Individual Countries and Area Studies of the Ministry of Education of the P.R.C (MoE). The Center for American Studies is awarded the title of Key Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences and Research Center for China-US Exchanges in Humanities by the MoE. The Center for Russian and Central Asian Studies is the MoE Research Center for China-Russia Exchanges in Humanities. And the Center for Asia-Pacific Cooperation and Governance Studies is credited as the University Think Tanks and the Innovative Research Bases for Social Sciences in Shanghai.

Today, IIS Fudan has evolved into a comprehensive research institute, leading 14 research centers and 1 research office, including the Center for American Studies, the Center for Japanese Studies, the Center for Korean Studies, the Center for Russian and Central Asian Studies, the Center for Shanghai Cooperation Organization Studies, the Center for the Study of the United Nations and International Organizations, the Center for the Study of Chinese Foreign Policy, the Center for South Asian Studies, the Pakistan Study Centre, the Center for China’s Relations with Neighboring Countries, the Center for China-EU Relations, the Center for Asia-Pacific Cooperation and Governance Studies, the Center for French Studies, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, and the Research Office for Latin American Studies.

IIS Fudan attracts 36 Ph.D. graduates to shoulder the full-time research and teaching at the institute, including 18 Professors, 14 Associate Professors and 4 Assistant Professors.

IIS Fudan aims to win recognition from the global academic community and fulfill 4 essential goals, including transforming into a top-notch research institute for individual countries and area studies in the Chinese international studies community, an outstanding think tank serving the national development and foreign engagement, an institute devoted to nurturing international studies talents, and lastly a vital platform where scholars can voice for China internationally.

A 4-person group leads IIS Fudan. They are Professor WU Xinbo (Dean), Senior Researcher LIU Jiping (Party Secretary) , Professor QI Huaigao (Vice Dean), and Professor LIN Minwang (Vice Dean).
