On February 19, 2023, the Institute of International Studies of Fudan University held a release conference for the strategic report on Sino-Japanese relations. At the conference, “China-Japanese Relations in 2022: Predicaments, Solutions and Security Era” was released. The report, the ninth in its Strategic Annual Report Series on Sino-Japanese Relations, was edited by the Center for Japanese Studies at Fudan University and co-authored by over ten renowned Chinese and Japanese scholars.

The introduction part of this report analyzes and evaluates the current situation and future trends of Sino-Japanese relations from a historical and comprehensive perspective. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the signing of the “Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship”. However, most scholars who participated in the project believe that the Sino-Japanese relationship has become increasingly complex and volatile in recent years.

The implementation of the “Bangkok Five-point Consensus” reached between Chinese and Japanese leaders in 2022 and the joint construction of a constructive and stable Sino-Japanese relationship in the new era receives great attention in this report.

Professor Hu Lingyuan, director of the Center for Japanese Studies, chaired the release conference and members of the research project introduced their respective chapters. Professor Zhang Jifeng, executive vice president of the National Association for Japanese Economics and research fellow at the Institute of Japanese Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Professor Cai Liang, research fellow at the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, made comments respectively.
