The 15th Fudan Symposium on China’s Neighborhood Diplomacy Successfully Held

From November 14 to 15, 2025, the 15th Fudan Symposium on China’s Neighborhood Diplomacy was held at Fudan University. The event was hosted by the Institute of International Studies, Fudan University (IIS Fudan) and organized by the Center for China and Neighboring Countries Relations Studies (CCRNC Fudan).

Under the theme “New Changes in China’s Neighborhood Environment and the Building of a Community with a Shared Future,” the symposium brought together more than 30 scholars from six countries—China, the Republic of Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Australia—for in-depth exchanges on regional trends and strategic cooperation.

Professor Wu Xinbo, Dean of IIS Fudan, chaired the opening session and delivered welcoming remarks. Ambassador Xu Bu, former President of the China Institute of International Studies (CIIS), and Dr. Rizal Sukma, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Indonesia, delivered keynote speeches.

Panel Discussions

The symposium featured five thematic panels.

Panel I: New Changes in China’s Neighborhood Environment and China’s Neighborhood Security

 Speakers included Kai He (Griffith University), Ju Hailong (Jinan University), Zhou Fangyin (Zhongshan University), Liu Feng (Tsinghua University), and Shi Tianyi (Shanghai University of Political Science and Law).

The session was chaired by Zhao Qinghai (Director, Editorial Department, CIIS).

Panel II: Historical Experience and Future Prospects of China’s Neighborhood Diplomacy

Speakers included Feng Liang (Nanjing University), Wang Jian (Chinese Academy of Social Science), Liu Zongyi (Shanghai Institutes for International Studies), and Xing Liju (Fudan University).

The session was chaired by Kai He (Professor, School of Government and International Relations, Griffith University).

Panel III: China’s Relations with Its Northern Neighbors

Speakers included Xiao Yang (Hubei Provincial Party School of the CPC), Kim Dong Chan (Yonsei University), Wang Qiu (University of Shanghai for Science and Technology), and Wang Mengxue (Shanghai International Studies University).

The session was chaired by Xin Qiang, Chair of the IIS Fudan Academic Committee.

Speakers included Zhao Qinghai (CIIS), Zhao Weihua (Fudan University), Nguyen Thanh Trung (Fulbright University Vietnam), Lei Xiaohua (Guangxi Academy of Social Science), and He Jiajie (Fudan University).

The session was chaired by Feng Liang (Deputy Director, Collaborative Innovation Center of South China Sea Studies, Nanjing University).

Panel V: China’s Relations with South Asian Countries

Speakers included Lin Minwang (Fudan University), Guan Peifeng (Wuhan University), Zhang Jiegen (Fudan University), and Li Hongmei (Shanghai Institutes for International Studies).

The session was chaired by Sun Degang (Director, Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Fudan University).

Since its launch in 2013, the Fudan Symposium on China’s Neighborhood Diplomacy has convened fifteen times. As China’s international environment evolves and major-country diplomacy deepens, this symposium series has become a key platform for Chinese and international scholars to share perspectives on neighborhood diplomacy, regional integration, and China’s foreign policy priorities.
