On October 27, 2023, the Shanghai Forum 2023 commenced at the Shanghai International Convention Center. That afternoon, Professor Wu Xinbo, Dean of the Institute of International Studies and Director of the Center for American Studies at Fudan University, presided over a high-level dialogue entitled Sino-American Relations: Too Big to Fail? The event spotlighted two prominent figures in Sino-American relations: Cui Tiankai, former Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the United States, and James Steinberg, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and current Dean of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. Both luminaries delved into a comprehensive discussion about the intricacies of the China-U.S. relationship, attracting a diverse international audience of experts, scholars, diplomats, and journalists. The venue was filled to capacity, with an engaged audience that actively posed questions, contributing to a dynamic and interactive session. The speakers, with their combined experience as diplomats and scholars, openly and thoroughly explored pivotal topics including the Biden administration’s policy on China, bilateral high-level exchanges, the Taiwan question, and the prospective trajectory of Sino-American relations. They took time to respond to the audience's inquiries thoughtfully. The dialogue took place against the backdrop of a pivotal time for Sino-American relations, marked by Wang Yi's visit to the United States. Wang Yi serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and as the Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs. This high-level exchange of ideas and perspectives provided invaluable insights into the current state and potential future of the relationship between the two countries, fostering a greater understanding between China and the United States.
