The Sixth NACAI International Symposium Held Online

On 2 November 2022, ASEAN Study Center at Universitas Indonesia hosted the Sixth International Symposium of Network of ASEAN-China Academic Institutes (NACAI) online, under the theme of “Beyond Post-Pandemic Recovery: Accelerating the Progress of SDGs Achievements in East Asia Through Regional Cooperation.” The Center for China’s Relations with Neighboring Countries at Fudan University (CCRNC-Fudan) is the permanent secretariat of NACAI. NACAI activites have been supported by the Office of Global Partnerships (Key Projects Development Fund), Fudan University. Dr. Edy Prasetyono, Executive Director of ASEAN Study Center, Universitas Indonesia, delivered welcoming remarks at the opening of the symposium.

More than 30 scholars from influential academic institutions in China and ASEAN countries attended this symposium. The first session was chaired by Dr. Shofwan Al Banna Choiruzzad from Universitas Indonesia. Professor Lee Cheuk Yin from Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Professor Meakh Sary from Royal Academy of Cambodia, Dr. Asra Virgianita from Universitas Indonesia, Professor Qi Huaigao from Fudan University, and Dr. Bounyadeth Daopasith from Natioanl University of Laos, respectively delivered presentations on topics of “Beyond Pandemic: On Shared Future of ASEAN-China Cooperation,” “The COVID-19 Pandemic Has Affected SDGs Progress Implementation in Cambodia,”  “Achieving the SDGs in Post Pandemic Era through Regional Cooperation: What Should Be Priorities?” “Sharing the Best Practices between Chinese Modernization and Modernizations of Southeast Asian Countries,” and “The Impact of the Outbreak of COVID-19 on the Implementation of SDGs in Laos.”

The second session was chaired by Dr. Edy Prasetyono from Universitas Indonesia. Dr. Lee Chee Leong from Universiti Malaya, Dr. Alexander Michael G. Palma from University of Philippines, Dr. Gong Xue from Nanyang Technological University, and Dr. Truong Quang Hoan from Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, respectively delivered presentations on topics of “Malaysia’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Progress, Challenges and Opportunities,” “Policy Challenges of the Health Supply Chain during the Post-Pandemic Recovery: The Philippine Experience of National and Sub-national Supply and Logistics Management,” “Ideational Challenges in SDGs Implementation,” and “COVID-19 Pandemic and the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Vietnam.”

At the closing of the symposium, on behalf of the permanent secretariat of NACAI, Professor Zhao Weihua, Director of CCRNC-Fudan, presented the annual report on NACAI activities in 2021-2022. Professor Henelito A. Sevilla, Jr., Dean of Asian Center at University of the Philippines Diliman, announced that his institution will host the Seventh International Symposium of NACAI in 2023.

Other scholars from Fudan University, including Associate Professor Wu Chengqiu and Dr. He Jiajie from the School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Dr. Zhang Li from the Institute of Belt and Road & Global Governance, and Dr. Wen Yao from CCRNC, also attended the symposium.

NACAI was established on 28 May 2017. On 28 May 2017, the First International Symposium was hosted by CCRNC-Fudan on “ASEAN-China Relations in Transition: Differences Management and Win-win Cooperation.” On 28 May 2018, CCRNC-Fudan hosted the Second International Symposium on “China-ASEAN Energy and Resources Cooperation in the ‘Diamond Decade’.” On 21 November 2019, Institute of China Studies at Universiti Malaya hosted the Third International Symposium on “China-ASEAN Relations in the Context of USChina Rivalry.” On 21 November 2020, Department of International Relations at University of Yangon in Myanmar hosted online the Fourth International Symposium on “ASEAN-China Cooperation in the Fight against COVID-19.” On 16 October 16 2021, Institute of Asian Studies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam hosted online the Fifth NACAI International Symposium on “Trade Linkages and Supply Chains Resilience: Navigating the COVID-19 New Normal.”
