On January 17-18, 2019, Professor WU Xinbo, Director of the Center for American Studies and Dean of the Institute of International Studies at Fudan University attended the International Symposium to Commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Normalization of Sino-U.S. Diplomatic Relations themed with “United States and China at 40: Seeking a New Framework to Manage Bilateral Relations” upon invitation in Atlanta, co-organized by The Carter Center, Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and The Institute of American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and Chinese Ambassador to the United States CUI Tiankai addressed opening speeches in the presence of distinguished audience.
In the delivery of remarks embracing Roundtable: The Role of University Exchange and China-U.S. Relations and Panel: China-U.S. Relations: Macro Views, Professor WU, at the outset of sessions, briefed on the endeavors dedicated by the CAS community to facilitate inter-exchanges with the counterparts in the United States, summing up the corresponding positive roles of University Exchange exerted on promotion of academic researches, consolidation of mutual understanding, elevation of China-U.S. friendship, and meanwhile with respect to denoting the emergence of challenges posing the exchanges under the new circumstances. Subsequently, Prof. WU, eminent scholar and expert researching on international relations, envisaged the principal factors influencing Sino-U.S. ties in the following decade, set forth penetrating insights into the issues or concerns existing in U.S. China policy and proposed forging a New Framework to manage China-U.S. bilateral relations in terms of Regulating Competition in Pragmatic Partnership against the current backdrop with strategic visions. Harry Harding, David Lampton, Chas Freeman, Kenneth Liberthal, renowned American political scientists specializing in Chinese studies and foreign affairs, proceeded to take the floor at the fore-mentioned latter session of the event as keynote panelists ensemble.
