Dr. REN Xiao is a professor of international politics at the Institute of International Studies (IIS), Fudan University, Shanghai, China,and was Director of the Center for the Study of Chinese Foreign Policy from June 2007 to September 2024. Previously he was Senior Fellow and Director of the Asia Pacific Studies Department, Shanghai Institute for International Studies (SIIS). Before joining SIIS in 2002, he taught at Fudan University Department of International Politics from 1992 to 2002 as lecturer (1992-96), associate professor (1996-2001) and professor (2001-02). Dr. Ren studied in the University of Essex in England (1990-91) and held visiting or research positions at the University of Turku, Finland, Nagoya University, Japan, and George Washington University in Washington, DC, USA. His research concentrates on theory of international politics, international relations of the Asia-Pacific, Northeast Asian security, and Chinese foreign policy. His recent publications are, among others, Human Security and Cross-Border Cooperation in East Asia (co-editor) (Palgrave Macmillan 2019), New Frontiers of China’s Foreign Relations (co-editor with Allen Carlson) (Lanham, MD: Lexington Books, 2011), China Debates Its Global Role (guest editor, special issue of The Pacific Review 2020), Sources and Transitions of Chinese Foreign Policy (guest editor, special issue of East Asia: An International Quarterly 2011), “Grown from Within: Building a Chinese School of International Relations”(2020), “Traditional Chinese Theory and Practice of Foreign Relations: A Reassessment”, and “Between Adapting and Shaping: China’s Role in Asian Regional Cooperation.” His other publications (available in Chinese) include China’s Foreign Aid: Theory and Practice (2017), New Perspectives on International Relations Theory (2001) and U.S.-China-Japan Triangular Relationship (2002). Dr. Ren serves on the editorial board of several international academic journals including Globalizations, Journal of Global Policy and Governance, East Asia: An International Quarterly, Journal of Chinese Political Science, Asian International Studies Review and East Asian Policy. He worked at the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo from 2010 to 2012 and is an adjunct professor of China Foreign Affairs University. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Fudan University in 1992.
