【Abstract】 This paper examines the evolution of Sino-U.S.  interactions in the Asia-Pacific region since the end of the Cold War  and summarizes its main features. Looking into the future, there exists  three patterns of interactions between the two countries: cooperation, competition, and a blend of economic cooperation plus geopolitical  competition. Given the prevailing trends in the development of the  Asia-Pacific, China and the United States should make a rational choice  by promoting regional cooperation and integration, setting common rules  and establishing regional mechanisms participated by all parties, and  creating a regional community. The two countries should work together to  shape an integrated, cooperative more equal regional order buttressed  by effective mechanism and fair, reasonable rules. To that end, China  needs to pursue more innovative policies and play a more active  leadership role, while the United States needs to adjust its thinking  and upgrade its ideas, appropriately defining its position and role in  the region.
