Disfunction and Transformation: Fudan Annual Report on International Strategy 2013 is the achievement of Institute of International Studies of Fudan University through collective discussion and division of writing.
Since international ‘breaking news’ always broke out and toke place one by one, in past 2013, the development of international situation is so changeful and vertiginous that we were not able to digest and caught the deep significance of every major events. However, it is necessary for the valuable international studies to fully and precisely grasp the importance and influence of some representative incidents. Those incidents, such as the Hollywood-movie-style Snowden incident or the unforeseeable coup in Egypt, the lasting dust in Syria or the street turbulence in some developing countries, the new picture of China’s domestic and diplomatic policy by new leadership or the political impotence and strategic adjustment of Obama cabinet, reflect a great trend of our times in in different perspective: The Transformation of Structure, The Transition of Paradigms and The Re-establishment of Rules.
Today, the dysfunction even no norm in the world indicates a new agenda for global governance. Meanwhile, the difficulty and complexity of the political and economic transitions in some countries reminds us be more prudent to the prospect of the change. In order to help realize the trend of our times as well as its complexity with better understanding, we select 8 special topics and perspectives, including the changing international political and economic situation, the momentum of great powers like China, U.S. and Japan, the disputation in cyberspace and the new social elements for protests over the world, to analyze the world situation in 2013.
Given the increasing international influence of China, it is more important for Chinese scholars to make right and appropriate estimate on international situation. Moreover, it is absolutely necessary for Chinese scholars to provide valuable thinking how China should do to face a fast-changing world when the relationship and interaction between China and the rest of the world become closer and stronger. This annual report published by Institute for International Studies of Fudan University is the very kind of endeavor.
